Fans will have plenty of time to ponder the implications of this mid-season finale now that the first half of the fifth season has ended.

The mid-season finale of the hit series, "A Knife and No coin," featured members of the Dutton family entering into open war with one another and left us wondering if Jamie could actually remove his father from office.

Jamie moves against his father

The main plot development of this episode is Jamie trying to remove his dad from the governor's office. Beth describes Jamie's actions as a declaration of war.

Beth and Jamie threaten each other in a violent confrontation after the move. Jamie threatens to reveal how many bodies John has dumped over the years if he moves forward with the impeachment, and Beth threatens to reveal that Jamie killedGarrett if he moves forward with the impeachment. Jamie says that he knows that John is running the ranch into the ground and that he plans to do what it takes to save it.

John might have known that the wolves on the ranch would be killed. Jamie and Beth are going to do whatever it takes to get the other out of the way, even if that means going to court.

Jamie and Beth are going to make runs at each other’s heads

A man and a woman talk in an office in Yellowstone.

Jamie asked Sarah if she knew anyone who could take Beth out in a more permanent fashion, as they canoodling late in the episode. Jamie wants to be prepared for Beth's run at him. Sarah agreed to meet with some potential hitmen on his behalf.

The episode doesn't finish on a high note. Monica pitches Kayce on the idea of moving to the east camp while they look after the ranch for the Duttons in the last scene. It may be the best way for them to get what they want. There is a fine scene, but a bit of a comedown from what the rest of the episode suggests.

The opening flashback hints at what’s to come

The way that Rip became a part of the Dutton clan is important to how the rest of the episode will play out. Jamie may be at war with the rest of his family, but once you're a Dutton, you're in for the long haul. Jamie and his dad may eventually get back together. He is still part of the family even as he prepares to die.

It won't end soon. The fifth season of the show will resume sometime this summer.
