New York Jets quarterback Mike White sat motionless at his locker for a while, staring down at his play sheets. He tore the papers into small pieces as a metaphor for the Jets' disappointing season.
The Jets' fifth straight defeat, a 23-6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, ended their playoff hopes. It was the 12th year in a row that they had failed to make the playoffs, the longest such skid in franchise history. They have had seven consecutive losing seasons.
White said it stung. It is difficult. It's hard to describe. All of the above is what it is. You can say anything you want to say about it.
The Jets were 7-4 after their win over the Bears, and appeared to be on their way to a playoff spot. They are in the middle of the worst late-season nose dive in team history because of a cold offense and quarterback instability. They haven't lost this many in a row after the 10th game in 20 years.
The coach said that the people in the locker room were hurting the most. It's difficult to see light at the end of the tunnel, but there are a lot of really cool things to look at this season. Right now it hurts.
The Jets were one of the biggest surprises with their fast start, even though they weren't expected to be a playoff contender. Everything fell apart due to expectations being raised.
Tyler Conklin is a tight end. Everyone is unhappy about it. I feel for everyone. It hurts that we didn't play well enough and we wanted this. It doesn't feel good. You won't be able to change that until next season, which makes it even worse.
The man said he will look at everything from the top down. The offense will be scrutinized the most. The Jets have scored only 12 points per game during their five-game losing streak.
White was shocked by the eight quarters without a touchdown.
The Jets were hoping that White's return to the lineup would help them win the last two games and possibly sneak into the playoffs. A wild-card spot would have been determined by a pair of wins and a loss by the New England Pats. White was rusty after missing two games because of broken ribs.
White, in his fourth start, completed only 23 of 46 passes for 241 yards and two turnovers. He was sacked four times and went three-for-15 with an intercept.
His ribs might have been a factor in his performance.
He said that he was allowed to play by the doctors. The guys in that locker room need to be treated with respect. I was aware of what I was getting into. I practiced all week. There is a standard those guys deserve. Today, I didn't live up to that standard.
The result was the same for different quarterbacks.
The Jets have scored at least 12 points in four of the last five games. Mike LaFleur's offense has averaged 30 points per game in 33 games. They were flat at times.
"We feel like we didn't do as well as we could have," said Wilson, speaking of the team as a whole. We wanted to go to the playoffs. I'm pretty sure this means we aren't going. We wanted to do that and have a chance to prove ourselves beyond that. We don't feel good about not getting there.
After allowing three consecutive scoring drives, the Jets were out of the game from the beginning. LaFleur got away from the ground game and White continued to fail. He was 17-for-40 with his targets.
D.J. Reed said the Jets received an unexpected shot at the playoffs after a few fortuitous results last weekend. They didn't take advantage of their second chance.
The special teams captain said that they didn't meet their expectations. It's disappointing when you don't make the playoffs. We will have a bad taste in our mouths for a while.
