Even as the House GOP leadership keeps silent, a veteran Republican lawmaker said Sunday that GeorgeSantos should consider resigning after the congressman-elect from New York admitted to lying about his heritage, education and professional career

Kevin Brady, a former House Ways and Means chairman who has served in Congress for 25 years, told "Fox News Sunday" thatSantos would have to take some huge steps to regain trust and respect in his district The new Congress is scheduled to begin on Tuesday.

It's troubling in so many ways. Brady said that he had lied repeatedly. He's going to have to consider his future. It's up to the voters who elected him to decide whether or not to keep him.

The 3rd Congressional District includes some Long Island suburbs and a small part of Queens. He is the first openly gay Republican to be elected to Congress. After helping Republicans win a razor-thin House majority,Santos is now under investigation for faking a lot of his biography. His campaign spending is being watched.

He hasn't stepped aside. On Fox News last week, he said that he had made a mistake and that he had lied.

The top House Republican, Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, who is running to become House speaker now that the GOP will hold the majority, has not said what action, if any, he would take againstSantos.

Brady said if he headed a committee that he wouldn't have him on it.

We are a country of second chances, according to the congressman. We are willing to do that when people are willing to turn their lives around and do what it takes to earn respect and trust again. Brady was hopeful thatSantos would choose the right path.

When The New York Times published an investigation into his resume, there were a lot of discrepancies. Santos has admitted lying about having Jewish ancestry, working for Wall Street banks and getting a college degree.

Democrats are expected to file a complaint with the Federal Election Commission and introduce a resolution to expel him once he becomes a congressman.
