The new year is a great time to see the Quadrantids. Along with other skywatching tips for January, this is a great opportunity to enjoy a sight of the night sky.

What to expect from the Quadrantids meteor shower

When the Earth passes through a patch of debris, there is a shower of meteors. The debris includes small chunks of rock that enter the atmosphere and burn up. The debris responsible for the shower was caused by an asteroid called 2003 EH1 which was left by comets.

One of the biggest meteor showers of the year takes place during the month of December. The best time to view the shower is when it peaks next week.

How to watch the Quadrantids meteor shower

The shower will peak in the evening of January 3 to January 4 and you may be able to see some shooting stars in the days before and after. The best time to view the moon is late in the evening of January 3 or early in the morning of January 4 as there will be a bright moon out which will make it harder to see meteorites.

If you want to see the shower, you will need clear skies to be able to see it. If you want to have a good night's vision, try to get far away from bright light sources and avoid looking at your phone.

Lying on the ground is a good place to look up at the sky. You should be able to see better after 15 to 20 minutes. If you are lucky, you will be able to see streaks of light shooting across the sky.
