Alexander Lukashenko signed amendments to the law that will allow him to remain in politics after his powers are terminated.

BelTA is the Belarusian state-owned news agency.

The changes reduce the authority of the Belarusian parliament in favour of a newly established body, the All-Belarusian People's Assembly, formed after a so-called referendum that amended the constitution of Belarus.

The people's assembly will only have one session from September to June. The parliament has taken away the right of judges to be elected to the constitutional court.

The All-Belarusian People's Assembly will have members from the lower and upper chambers of the parliament.

A life member of the Council of the Republic will be granted to a president who has stopped exercising his powers. Putin will be able to sit on Russia's Federation Council after his presidential powers are taken away.

According to Lukashenko's regime, more than half of the people in the country supported the new constitution. The All-Belarusian People's Assembly will have the right to dismiss the president if they don't like what they see.

The All-Belarusian People's Assembly would have a political transition in which Lukashenko would leave the presidency. The new constitution allows Lukashenko to retain his position as president and head of the All-Belarusian People's Assembly.

Most of the world's states did not recognize Lukashenko's August 2020 presidential elections. The government in exile was headed by the leader of the opposition.
