The city of Sacramento, Calif. is located in the state of California. A powerful storm brought rain and snow to much of California on Saturday, snarling traffic and closing highways as the state prepared to ring in the New Year.

There is a chance of 2 feet of snow in the high Sierra Nevada. Vehicles were required to have chains or four-wheel drive on snow covered mountain passes after the National Weather Service warned about hazardous driving conditions.

A large amount of water from the Pacific Ocean was being pulled in by a river storm. Some roads were closed due to flooding and rock slides.

A section of U.S. 101 south of San Francisco has been closed because of flooding. Heavy rains caused a staircase in Oakland to turn into a waterfall and mud-colored water to flow along San Francisco streets.

The storm could bring over an inch of rain to the area, according to the weather service. One ski resort south of Lake Tahoe closed chair lifts because of flooding and operational problems and posted a photo on social media showing one lift tower surrounded by water.

The map shows a wide range of totals from less than an inch in some areas to more than 5 inches in the Sierra foothills.

There were a lot of lift closings due to high winds and low visibility.

A car that appeared to be stuck in more than a foot of water was posted by the police department.

Much more precipitation is needed to make a difference in California, even though the rain was welcome. California has been the driest state on record.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the upper elevations of the Sierra, where as much as 5 feet of snow is possible.

There was a flood watch in effect through New Year's Eve. The officials warned that the rivers could overflow.

The San Francisco Bay Area received some rain.

The north side of Highway 49 was closed because of flooding and the east side of Highway 70 was partially closed due to a slide. There was a section of Highway 50 that was closed due to flooding.

According to the National Weather Service, roads in the county were flooded after the earthquake. If the Eel River gets too high, the bridge could be closed again.

It was the first storm to hit California. The current system is expected to be warm and wet, while next week's storms will be cooler.

The region could get up to 5 inches of rain over the course of the week.

The weather service in Reno said that strong winds could cause tree damage and lead to power failures.

There were warnings in the wilderness around Lake Tahoe.

Minor to moderate flooding was forecast along some rivers and streams in the north and south of Reno, Nevada.

Moderate to heavy rain was falling in Southern California. On New Year's Day, the region will begin to dry out, with no rain expected during the Rose Parade.

The National Weather Service said there would be more showers on Tuesday or Wednesday.
