Now is the best time to look back at the various films and TV shows that this year produced, but it is also time for viewers to start thinking about what will be released next year. There are still a lot of titles that haven't been officially announced or dated, but the year is already shaping up to be a great one. From its handful of exciting franchise sequels to its equal number of prestige, auteur-made dramas, it is shaping up to be refreshingly interesting and varied.

The list of the 10 most anticipated TV shows was released earlier this week. With only a few more days left in the year, here are our 10 most anticipated movies.

John Wick: Chapter 4 — March 24, 2023

The JohnWick series has evolved in many interesting ways. An intricate, labyrinthine underground world of spies, assassins, and secret royalty has grown into a saga about a film about a retired hit man. It is a testament to the quality of the JohnWick franchise that it has never deviated from its main focus.

Picking up where the franchise's bold third installment left off, John Wick: Chapter 4 promises to continue its eponymous assassin's complicated story while also giving him the chance to face off against action movie legends.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse — June 2, 2023

The debut of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse redefined expectations for both superhero and animated films. It feels like a genuinely unique addition to an increasingly overcrowded genre thanks to the film's experimental animation style and narrative focus onMiles Morales. It looks like the sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, will honor the spirit of the first movie.

Following the events of Into the Spider-Verse, the new film will follow Miles and Gwen as they travel further into the Spider-Verse. They will have to fight to find a way to save every universe from what has so far only been described as a mystery in the film.

Asteroid City — June 16, 2023

Every film that Wes Anderson releases is seen as an event by both film critics and cinephiles. It seems like his next film, Asteroid City, won't break that tradition. Fans of Anderson's work will know that the new coming-of-age film has the most impressive ensemble he has ever assembled on-screen.

The film has Tom Hanks and Tilda Swinton in it, as well as other actors. The film, which was shot in Spain, will follow a group of students and parents as they gather together in a 1950s American desert town to participate in a junior stargazer convention

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny — June 30, 2023

15 years after Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it is impossible to say whether or not the sequel will be as good as fans want it to be. The first Indiana Jones adventure that wasn't directed by Steven Spielberg has a lot going for it. James Mangold is the director of the film, as well as the new film star, Harrison Ford, and others.

Mangold has become one of the more reliable and distinct studio directors. It doesn't mean he'll be able to recreate the spirit and heart of Spielberg's original Indiana Jones films. The film's ultimate quality is unimportant right now. A new Indiana Jones movie starring Harrison Ford was always going to make the cut.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, Part One — July 14, 2023

John Wick: Chapter 4 is one of the most promising upcoming Hollywood action films. The Mission: Impossible franchise has become one of Hollywood's most reliable, consistently entertaining film series over the course of the past 20 years. Mission:Impossible-Fallout is considered by many to be the best of the series so far.

Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie have worked together before. McQuarrie and Cruise have earned their place in recent years as one of Hollywood's greatest director-actor duos, and it doesn't appear that Dead Reckoning will threaten their position in any way. As a matter of fact, the film is already shaping up to be just as big and dangerous as Mission:Impossible-Fallout.

Oppenheimer — July 21, 2023

Christopher Nolan's 12th feature film will be released in the summer of 2020. The film will look at one of the most important moments of the war. Nolan will follow his eponymous physicist as he leads the Manhattan Project's Los Alamos Laboratory on a journey that inevitably leads to the creation of the atomic bomb in his next movie.

The early trailers for Oppenheimer have sold it as a massive psychological thriller, one that blends the Manhattan Project's notorious experiments with fiery, terrifying images of the destruction that atom bombs have the ability to leave in their wake. Nolan has tried before to combine awe-inspiring spectacle with grounded, real-life science. Murphy is one of many recognizable actors in the ensemble cast.

Barbie — July 21, 2023

The movie based on the Barbie toy brand is one of the most promising movies of the year. Here we are. After a few wild set photos from the film's production set the internet ablaze, Warner Bros. released a trailer for Barbie in December that turned out to be just as playful and crazy as the movie's many internet watchers had hoped it would be.

There are very few details about the plot of the movie. Barbie is the most promising studio comedy of the next decade because of its self-awareness and pastel color scheme. Barbie has an impressive screen ensemble as well as it hits theaters on July 21,23. The film features a supporting cast that includes Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Emma Mackey, Michael Cera, SimuLiu, and Ncuti Gatwa.

Dune: Part Two — November 3, 2023

Warner Bros. Pictures

Dune is one of the most impressive sci-fi films of the last few years, so it makes sense to include Dune: Part Two on this list. The new film will once again be directed by Sicario and Arrival's Denis Villeneuve, as well as reprising their Dune roles, and will be released in the summer of 2020.

The cast of Dune: Part Two includes a number of new faces, including AustinButler, Christopher Walken, and Florence Pugh. There is no reason to believe that Dune: Part Two won't be as good as the first one. Dune: Part Two seems to be as promising as any other movie that will come out in the next decade.

Killers of the Flower Moon — TBA

Lily Gladstone and Leonardo DiCaprio sit at a dinner table together in Killers of the Flower Moon.
Apple TV+

Apple TV+ has teased that Killers of the Flower Moon will be released in 2023. With the caliber of talent involved in the film, there is no reason not to include this promising crime thriller on this list.

Not only is the new film the first that Goodfellas and Taxi Driver director Martin Scorsese has made since The Irishman, but it is also set to unite him with two of his most frequent onscreen partners, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. The film has an all-star cast that includes Jesse Plemons. The true story behind a series of murders that plagued a Native American tribe in 1920s Oklahoma will be explored in the film.

Beau is Afraid — TBA

A de-aged Joaquin Phoenix smiles on the poster for Beau is Afraid.
A24

A 24 production, which is set to be a follow-up to Midsommar, is shrouded in mystery. The film was previously called Disappointment Blvd and was described as a "nightmare comedy". According to the few plot details that have been released from it, it will follow an anxiety-ridden man who sets off on a reality-altering journey home after the death of his mother.

It was always going to land on a list like this after the success of the first two films in the trilogy. Fortunately, the few details that have been released about Beau is Afraid, along with its eerie first poster, all suggest that it will be just as weird as anything Aster has ever made. That alone makes me excited for Beau is Afraid.
