Barbara was known for her work on NBC's Today show and ABC's The View as well as her series of ABC prime time pre-Oscars and end-of-year interview specials.

ABC News said that Barbara Walters shattered the glass ceiling and became a dominant force in the industry.

While at ABC News, he won 11 of the 12 Emmys that he received. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007.

Barbara Walters was born in Boston on September 25, 1929, and made her debut on The Morning Show on CBS in 1957. She joined NBC's Today show in 1961, working as a writer and researcher before becoming the show's regular "Today Girl." She became a reporter at large within a year. She was named as the program's first female co- host following the death of Frank McGee.

She co-anchored the ABC Evening News with Harry Reasoner in 1976, becoming the first female co-anchor of a network newscast.

"We were all influenced by her, she was an extraordinary human being, journalist, pioneer, legend," ABC News' David Muir said in a tribute.

He said that she broke barriers behind the scenes and broke news on camera. She was able to get people to say things they wouldn't say to a journalist.

In 1979 she and Hugh Downs were together again on ABC's newsmagazine 20/20. She and Bill Geddie created The View, a forum for women of different generations.

She interviewed many famous people over the years, including Richard Nixon and his wife, Pat, John Wayne, Henry Kissinger, and Barbra Streisand.

She launched her Most Fascinating People special broadcasts in 1993 which offered a year-end review of notable newsmakers of the year.

In her memoir, she said that she wanted to succeed from her sister, who was disabled.

She continued to do interviews and specials for ABC News after co-hosting The View with Rosie O'Donnell.

The documentary series American Scandals was hosted byWalters. Donald Trump was her final interview. In 2016 she last appeared in public.

She is survived by her adopted daughter.
