Alex Neil's Potters were beaten by a narrow goal at the top of the Championship, but it wasn't enough to stop the Clarets from climbing to the top of the table.

The summer signing from Anderlecht's first goal was the difference between the two sides.

After one of their toughest tests of the season, the in-form Clarets were able to restore their three-point cushion over second-placedSheffield United.

The chasing pack has been broken away by the two teams.

The rest of the Championship top 10 are separated by just three points, while third-place Blackburn are 11 points adrift of the automatic promotion place.

It looked like they had been rattled early on in the game.

The confusion between Ian Maatsen and Arijanet Muric allowed Tyrese Campbell to round the keeper and get to the byline and score.

Nobody supported him when he squared over to the net that should have been empty.

Campbell had a shot blocked.

When he ran into the penalty area, he might have been brought down by Morgan Fox, which could have led to a penalty claim for the visitors.

The visitors' claims were waved away by the referee, just as he did for the two Potters' penalties.

Morgan Fox's shot was blocked by keeper Muric in a scramble, and there was a second escape for the team.

Within eight minutes of the arrival of Jay Rodriguez and Anass Zaroury on the bench, the Clarets had scored.

The ball rebounded back off Jack Bonham, who was a few feet off the floor, and into the net after a scramble in front of the goal.

Who's next?

Both sides will be back in action on Monday on the New Year's Day bank holiday.

Alex Neil spoke to the radio.

The match was very close. A lot of things were done well by us. We were organized. We didn't deserve to lose.

It was frustrating to concede the goal. They did not create it. We gave it away.

I feel for the players because they worked so hard.

The boss of the club told the radio station.

It was a big victory. If you don't take into account the derby, it could be our biggest win of the year. It's important to win a night game at Potters.

If you do it that way, it gives you confidence for the future. A reason to believe is given by it.

We didn't allow the opposition to put us under a lot of pressure.
