The 1970s Church Committee, a post-Watergate congressional panel, was modeled after by a group of seven House members.

President Joe Biden's Covid-19 and border security policies, as well as reviews of the FBI and Department of Justice's handling of investigations into former President Donald Trump and the January 6 Capitol riots are likely to be investigated by the committee.

In a call with House Republicans on Friday, McCarthy expressed openness to forming the committee, even though his office did not respond to questions about whether he would meet the request.

According to CNN, McCarthy made a significant concession to conservatives this week, and one that would curtail his power.

You don't get a lot of nibbles at the apple. Republican plans to investigate and conservatives trying to form a panel are things that need to be done right, according to Rep.Chip Roy.

When the Republicans won less seats in the House than expected, McCarthy's hopes of becoming speaker were thrown into doubt. McCarthy needs 218 votes to win the speakership in the leadership elections on January 3. The upcoming election will go to additional rounds of voting if one candidate does not win the majority of the votes. Five House Freedom Caucus members said they will vote as a bloc in the leadership elections, all of whom have expressed plans to vote against McCarthy or cast doubts on his leadership ability. The seven members who are pushing for the Church-style committee also made a number of other requests to incoming House leadership in a letter sent earlier this month.
