A new class of business owners made up of solopreneurs, freelancer, and full-time side hustlers who launched companies at a record rate after the swine flu outbreak.

More than 5 million business applications were filed in the US in 2011. For most of the year, entrepreneurs started more than 400,000 firms.

The businesses range from restaurants to social-media marketing agencies.

Flexibility, agility, and originality are required when starting a business. Insider spoke to ten entrepreneurs who said they structured their days for success, found a work-life balance, and fostered their creativity.

They wake up early for a head start

The founder of a coffee truck and the co-owner of a restaurant wake up at the same time.

The early start gives him the chance to balance his two jobs, one of which is running Cafe C ph. She runs her cafe from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and uses downtime between customers to tackle tasks for her other job.

The actor and dancer had been dreaming of opening her own coffee shop. After the crisis left her without a job, she turned her passion project into a career. Insider verified that she made six figures in sales in her first year of business.

Graham starts her day early because she doesn't get a lot of quiet time. She has two children. She drinks tea and prays before going to sleep.

Graham and her husband opened a restaurant in Brooklyn in the year 2020. Good Guice is based on Graham's family recipe. Insider verified that the couple booked almost $4 million in revenue.

They create strict schedules to ensure productivity 

Charlotte was unable to find a job after losing her job. She opened her jewelry business after buying a bead kit on Amazon.

Running every morning and blocking specific hours is part of her daily schedule. Even if she's not tired, she stops working at 10 p.m.

She said that getting a good night's sleep is important.

Zaya Wade, the daughter of the basketball star Dwyane Wade, is one of the models who has been wearing the creations of the two sisters.

A 29-year-old turned her hobby into a jewelry business that was popular with models and a 'Bachelor' star. She is spending her day here.

They block time to build their digital brands

She said that her growth was due to being consistent and genuine with her fans.

She told Insider that she was proud of what she had created. I'm really looking forward to growing older with them.

She builds her social-media presence at night. She's going to draft posts between 9 and 10 p.m. The cafe has a lot of followers on the social media site, where it highlights colorful lattes, new merchandise, and a promo for the lunar new year.

They prioritize downtime to have fun

According to Erifili Gounari and Jessica Hawks, part of their success came from knowing when to stop working.

Gounari is the founder of the social-media agency The Z Link and also runs social media for the insurance company SafetyWing. Setting boundaries and taking time away from work are some of the things that must be done to balance these jobs. She will eat dinner with her family if she finishes early.

Sometimes I have to deal with a work task later in the day. It's important for me to remind myself that I shouldn't be working all the time.

The Hawks balance a busy day. She also runs a virtual-assistant coaching business and is a host of a show. She booked more than one million dollars in sales in 2020. She finds time for fun despite her work load.

Hawks said that you have created something for yourself that allows you to travel and spend time with your friends and family.

Gen Z entrepreneurs are more focused on outdoor activities to avoid burnout. SoundMind is a music therapy app that helps people who are experiencing trauma, anxiety, and depression. Reports of a mental health crisis caused the two men to think about what they could do to help.

Chen and Femminella like to go on hikes to get away from work.

Femminella said it was to see the world and hear the sound of the parachute as a way to reset his mind.

The 21-year-old founder and CEO behind a social media agency that's worked with the UN swears by 7:30 a.m.

A virtual assistant scaled her business to over $1 million in sales by following this daily routine.

Being a founder is a time- intensive and emotionally demanding job, which is why the energy you're surrounded by is key, both Meha Agrawal, founder of journal company Silk & Sonder and Liah Yoo, founder of beauty brand KraveBeatuy told Insider.

The energy map should be done by every founder. Identifying what activities raise your energy and refresh you, and what depletes you, will help you plan for the future.

She suggests giving up some of the work so you can focus on what makes you happy.

According to documentation, Agrawal used this method to grow her business from a side hobby to a brand that booked more than $3 million in sales over the course of a year.

She uses a similar strategy to figure out where to use herenergy.

She puts high-energy and low-energy tasks on her calendar. She said she would reexamine her priorities if she noticed too much red.

In her first year of business, she hit eight figures in sales and has been using this method ever since.

She dedicates 20% of her day or week to something that sparks joy, and the energy audit is a huge part of it. I don't think I'd be able to last a day or a week if I didn't have 20% of my creativity left.
