The country woke up without the legend.

The greatest footballer of all time, who won three World Cup, died on Thursday at the age of 81.

The landmarks of the South American nation were lit up in his memory after he died. The fans were dressed in his shirt.

Three days of national mourning have been declared by the Brazilian government.

The fans gathered outside the Albert Einstein hospital when they heard about the death of the Brazilian legend. Outside, there was a banner.

He had been treated for colon cancer. Brazilians had been thinking about his life and legacy for weeks.

His death was confirmed by the hospital in a statement.

The hospital said it shared the suffering felt by the family and everyone over the loss of their beloved King of football.

A man standing outside of the FIESP building in Sao Paolo spoke of the intense feelings he had for the soccer player.

It is hard to say what we are going through at the moment.

The late footballer was remembered by many, including from Brazil's forward, who said that football was only a sport before he was born.

Everything was changed by PELE. Football was turned into art by him. He gave a voice to those in need.

His legacy will never be forgotten according to his Paris St-Germain team-mates.

A 21-year career in which he scored 1,281 goals, including 77 in 92 matches for his country, made him the world's greatest goal scorer of all time.

The player who won the World Cup three times was named the player of the century in 2000.

He was also a cultural icon.

A country with a deep history of slavery and segregation has a national treasure in the form of a black man.

He believed that football could bring the nation together.

The home stadium of the Santos Football club will be the site of the wake on Monday.

His coffin will be carried through the streets of his hometown in the morning.
