For the first time in 22 years, there will be no new Mac models in the fourth quarter of this year.
Every year in the fourth quarter, Apple releases at least one new Mac model, starting with the iBook G3 in 2001. This means that there will be a new Mac at the end of the year for the entire line of products. The M2 MacBook Air is Apple's last Mac. The time following the launch of the MacBook Air could be one of the longest periods with no new Mac models at all.
It is almost certain that the new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models will not be released before the end of the year because of mass production forecasts. The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models will be delayed until March next year, according to a supply chain source. When Mark Gurman said in October that the next wave of Mac releases will happen in the first quarter of 2023, the picture became clearer.
The next- generation MacBook Pro models will be delayed up to six months. Gurman thinks the next MacBook Pros won't have much else besides the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips.
It was thought that the Mac Pro would align with Apple's wish to transition the entire Mac lineup to Apple Silicon within two years. "That's for another day," Apple said at its "Peek Performance" event earlier this year. An M1 variant of the Mac Pro was ready to launch earlier in the year, but Apple appears to be waiting for an even bigger performance and efficiency jump next year.
The Apple Mac Pro's chip options and specifications provide a fairly straightforward picture of what to expect from the new flagship Mac, but little is currently known about the device's design, ports, performance, and potential for personalization. Gurman said that Apple probably scrapped plans for an M2 Extreme chip, but M2 Ultra configurations of the new Mac Pro still seem to be on track.
