I admit it. I have a love-hate relationship with the beverage of the same name. Love from the point of view of nostalgia. Hates from the point of view of taste. I feel like I need to stake my claim to what is an irrefutable part of my heritage and that of the wider Caribbean region as this good-for-you drink is rapidly gaining traction in the global market.

The mauby is a centuries old brew made from the bark of the columbrina elliptica and is found in the English Caribbean, Spanish Caribbean, and French Caribbean.

It is an acquired taste according to many people.

I remember being hit by the bitter-sweet bark of the snakewood tree many times when I was a kid in Barbados. You would think I would have learned from the beginning.
