Three astronauts who have no ride back to Earth are currently on the International Space Station.

There was a serious leak a couple of weeks ago from the Russian capsule that was used to transport the three astronauts to the International Space Station.

The cause and extent of the damage is still being investigated by NASA and Roscosmos as they try to figure out how to get the three crew members home before their departure date.

The trio could be brought home if the safety checks go well. It is possible that an empty Soyuz can be sent to the International Space Station to collect them.

NASA could step in if Roscosmos' solutions are problematic.

On Thursday it was revealed that the U.S. space agency is considering using one of the Crew Dragon spaceships to carry out a mission.

NASA has asked SpaceX a few questions about their ability to return additional crew members on Dragon, but that is not their main focus at the moment.

It isn't clear if NASA's inquiry focuses on fitting more seats to the Crew Dragon currently docked at the International Space Station or not. It is possible that NASA is interested in sending an empty Crew Dragon to the International Space Station to save the three crew members.

The safety of the crew is not a concern for the agency, according to Yury Borisov.

Should the station face a situation in which all seven crew members have to leave, NASA and Russia will want to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
