Ryan Tannehill's football career is over, according to reports.

According to Ian Rapoport, Ryan Tannehill was placed on injured reserve by the TennesseeTitans on Wednesday due to an ankle injury.

Tannehill had surgery on his ankle and wasn't expected to return this year even if the team makes the playoffs, according to a report. The Tennessee Volunteers have lost five games in a row and will face the Dallas Cowboys at home on Thursday.

Tannehill will be entering the last year of a four-year contract. The salary cap can be saved by releasing him.

In 12 starts, he threw for 2,536 yards and 13 touchdown. Tennessee has reached the playoffs in each of Tannehill's first three years with the team, but it was due to the vaunted rushing attack.

Tannehill missed last week's game against the Houston Texans, but that didn't stop the rookies from starting. He has yet to score in his three starts.
