There was to be disappointment in the 1962 World Cup, however, when an injury in the first game of the tournament ended the career of one of the greatest players of all time.

A rush of wealthy clubs, including Manchester United and Real Madrid, tried to sign the man who was already considered the greatest footballer in the world.

The Brazilian government declared him a national treasure to prevent him from being moved.

The 1966 World Cup was not a good one for Brazil. In the games against Portugal and Bulgaria, there were a lot of fouls.

Brazil failed to progress beyond the first round, and Pele's injuries from the tackles he had suffered meant he couldn't play at his best.

The decline ofSantos and the decline ofPelho made less of a contribution to his side.

The World Cup in Mexico in 1970 was the reason why Pele was reluctant to play.

His country's military dictatorship suspected him of being left-wing and had to investigate him.

In 1977 a sell-out game was played to mark the retirement of Brazil's greatest soccer player. He played for both sides.

After his retirement, one of the most paid sportsmen in the world continued to make money.

He quit his Unesco role after being accused of corruption.
