Many people take their holiday decorations down and put them away for the year now that Christmas is over and the year is almost here. Those who bring a live Christmas tree into their home have to deal with a lot more than just removing it and figuring out how to reuse, recycle, or dispose of it.

The most annoying parts of a Christmas tree clean-up are the needles. The easiest ways to deal with post- holiday messes are listed here.

How to remove Christmas tree sap from various surfaces

It can be difficult to get out of carpets and upholstery, and off hardwood and other flooring. The longer it sits, the harder it will be to remove, so if you notice it anywhere other than on the tree, you should do it immediately. This is what to do.

Hardwood floors

You can use a clean sponge or cloth to apply non-diluted oil soap. Use a soft bristle brush to scrub it off after 15 minutes. The area should be washed with water. You can use vegetable shortening instead of oil based soap if you don't have it.

Carpet and upholstery

It is possible to use an ice cube to freeze the area first, then use a plastic knife to remove as much of the sap as possible before trying to clean it.

Use a clean cloth or sponge to rub some rubbing alcohol on the carpet or upholstery. If that didn't get it all off, you can use a clean cloth or sponge to rinse it.

How to clean up Christmas tree needles

When you are ready to say goodbye to your Christmas tree, you should put some type of floor covering around the base of the tree, as well as the doorway that leads outside. Before you start removing ornaments or lights, you should do this first to make sure the needles don't fall off.

There will be needles on the ground even if you do this. There is a way to get rid of those.

Baking soda

Baking soda can be sprinkled on the needles and sat for a while. It will be easier to clean up if this is used.

Broom and dustpan

If you sweep the baking-soda-covered needles up with a broom and dustpan, you can easily grab your vacuum. You need a broom with rubber bristles to clean carpeted floors.

Vacuum attachment

Even covered in baking soda, pine needles can cause serious damage to a vacuum cleaner if they get stuck in the rollers or other parts of the machine. It may be easier to use a broom than it is to vacuum.

If you want to use a vacuum, you need to empty the container first. Don't use the upholstery attachment if you want to use the sweeper.
