The flight from New York to Miami left on December 29, 1972 There was a plane that crashed into Florida. 2 out of 10 flight attendants and 96 of the 163 passengers on the plane died. 75 people were alive.
The plane's auto-pilot was accidentally disconnected while the crew dealt with a malfunctioning landing gear indicator light. The flight crew didn't know the plane was descending.
The majority of the people who died in the crash were in the midsection of the plane. The force of the crash absorbed a lot of it and the mud from the swamp helped prevent passengers from bleeding out.
The equipment that was salvaged from the crash was used in other Eastern Air Lines L-1011 aircraft, as well as in a 1976 book called The Ghost of Flight 401.
