The Department of Consumer Affairs in India seems to be planning to add Wearables to the list of devices that could abandon different charging methods.

According to the Press Trust of India, a senior consumer affairs official has confirmed that India's government is considering mandating a universal charging solution for Wearable Devices. The consumer affairs officials and industry stakeholders had a discussion about this. Stakeholders agreed to standardize the USB-C charging solution for laptops and phones.

India's market regulators don't know what type of charging port they will use for Wearables. The industry will probably choose a solution that is already available on the market, such as a flat charging dock or pogo pins.

Many of today's best Android watches use either of these solutions, which contributes to the lack of a common charging method.

At least in India, Apple and SAMSUNG may be forced to part ways with their proprietary chargers for Wearables. It is only a matter of time before this standard is used in other countries. The industry will see the rise of two types of universal charging ports.

When the common charging method makes its way to consumers, the Consumer Affairs Secretary said that they need to align with the European Union's timelines.

A single charging solution is being researched by the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur. Industry stakeholders will most likely discuss the proposals after the research is complete.
