Alfredo Morelos scores
Alfredo Morelos' opener was his fifth goal of the season for the Colombian

Rangers maintained their 100% start going into the Old Firm derby against a Celtic team at a higher level by beating Motherwell in the Scottish league.

The visitors had a bright start before Morelos' opener wiped them out.

Rangers had their efforts cleared off the line twice, but it was not enough for them to get the win.

Motherwell dropped to 10th as they stayed nine points behind Celtic.

Steven Hammell's side had their moments, including having a goal disallowed when three down, but have now lost nine of their past 14 matches.

They are playing at a higher level than we are. When asked if there was a gap between the Old Firm clubs, Beale said that everyone could see it.

We were six points behind them last year, so things can change with time. The aim is to have good recruitment, good training and a feel good factor around the club. We have to return to where we were.

A derby is good for levellers.

Motherwell gave up a point to 10-man Kilmarnock in Govan on Friday despite holding a two- goal lead.

The Fir Park club haven't done anything like that in the league since 1997.

Despite that - and Kevin van Veen being on the bench after a sickness bug - Hammell's men started brightly. There were a lot of corners that gave early hope.

Rangers did not need the encouragement which allowed them to win their fourth game in a row.

On 13 minutes, Borna Barisic was given acres of space to swing in a ball. With Liam Kelly on his line, Morelos nodded in his fifth of the season from six yards.

As Motherwell tried to steady the ship, a heavy touch on a drenched surface robbed Dean Cornelius of a decent shot at goal.

The visiting defence was breached once more before the break. Again, it came from a Barisic ball, and this time it was the head of Goldson. A combination of the two players skewed the ball over Kelly and it skidded in off the underside of the bar.

Alex Lowry and Morelos both had their efforts hacked off the line after the break, before the latter fed Tillman to slam a shot into the far corner.

The chance of a late comeback briefly flickered only for a VAR check, while teenage substitute Luca Ross was denied by a man almost twice his age as McGregor got down.

Mouth-watering derby appears on horizon - analysis

While he described his team as a work in progress before the match, the man who once stood on the Ibrox touchline next to Steven Gerrard has stabilised the Rangers ship and gained confidence going into Monday's game with Celtic.

There were moments of concern at the back and with the occasional slack pass, but Barisic and Goldson provided a solid base, while Morelos is starting to click again.

Results and reinforcements are desperately needed by Motherwell. With no word on Louis Moult's return, bolstering the attack will be a priority, and new signingShane Blaney will come straight in to shore up the defence.

With injuries limiting his efforts with a thin squad at his disposal, Hammell has been fighting hard to keep his job, and he will be hoping a couple of new faces can help alleviate the stress on his life.

What they said

Celtic 'playing at a higher level' than Rangers - Michael Beale

It was a difficult game for us. We put on a couple of 16-year-olds who conducted themselves well and that shows where we are at right now.

We were on the front foot from the start. We got into some good areas, but weren't clinical enough. The story of our season is that.

We need to do better when we are in those moments and fine margins. Now, the next game is even more important. It is huge.

What next?

The first Old Firm derby of the year will take place on January 2nd when Rangers host Celtic.
