It was the rise of Justin Fields that led to the downfall of the man. For every mistake from Wilson, there is an impressive Fields pass or run, and that disparity has many people wondering how in the world Fields went from the consensus No.2 quarterback to the 11th pick. The people always go back to the pro day of the guy.
The throw is believed to be the one that fooled teams into thinking Wilson was a top three pick. Fields fell as Wilson rose up the draft board. There are two statements that are absolutely malarkey.
Wilson had a pro day. Wilson wouldn't have been considered a top-three pick prior to that throw if it had had such a drastic effect.
Wilson is predicted to be taken second overall in a mock draft. Wilson is second in this one from Pro Football Network. More than a month before Wilson made that throw, all of them had him going second overall. The Jets had their sights set on Wilson for a long time. The Pro Day solidified their decision to take Wilson with the second overall pick, but it really didn't make a difference for them.
Will Levis of Kentucky and Anthony Richardson of Florida are two of the college quarterbacks who have the potential to be great Pro Day quarterbacks. These are not the same things. Wilson became a first-round pick over the course of his final college season, but Levis and Richardson were first-round talents years before that.
The mock draft was done before the start of the college football season. Levis and Richardson are predicted to go in the first round. Richardson went sixth and Levis went 21st. Both of these guys were already viewed in high regard by most draft analysts. Wilson had a different story to tell.
There is a mock draft from NBC Sports. Are you familiar with Wilson's name? There is a Bleacher Report mock draft. The magazine Sports Illustrated. Nope, that's right. Wilson wasn't on any of the lists. Wilson used the shroud of the 2020 COVID season to convince scouts that he was a natural improviser because of his lack of athletic ability. The team went 1-2 against ranked opponents and dominated Western Kentucky and Troy. It isn't the case for either Kentucky or Florida.
There are bound to be outliers. Prior to the 2020 draft, most people had Joe Burrow going to be a free agent. He ends up having the greatest season in college football history and going first overall in the draft, leading the Cincinnati Bengal to the Super Bowl in his second season. Excluding outliers should never be the basis for a counterargument, as there is a difference between the two. The guy who beat Wilson and threw the ball only 15 times was from the Carolinas.
hindsight is not always right I was fooled by Wilson. Wilson is being compared to incoming prospects who have taken wildly different paths to achieve first-round status because of his poor career trajectory. Concerns over Levis and Richardson are ok. Levis has concerns with his deep ball accuracy and tendency to leave the pocket too early. Power to you if you dislike Richardson because of his poor decision-making. I don't know how you came to that conclusion.
Wilson didn't have anything to do with Fields falling. Fields was thought to be the second pick. There was more than one quarterback taken before Fields. The most consequential factor was Wilson's rise. Fields fell. I can assure you that Wilson was not the reason.
Fans are hoping that their teams will avoid the same fate as Wilson did with the loaded 2023 quarterback class. Some of the quarterbacks are being compared to Wilson. There are many differences that are vastly different from each other. Don't look for reasons to dislike these quarterbacks because of their off-field likeness. That isn't a winning combination.
