Amazon is using drones to deliver orders. Just in time for Christmas, Amazon Prime Air is operating in Lockeford, California and College Station, Texas.

The FAA approved the use of drones for package delivery in August of this year. 85% of Amazon's shipments fall under the 5 lbs maximum for Prime Air.

Amazon will confirm that it can deliver to the customer's address after residents of both towns sign up for the service. The customer gets an estimated delivery time when they place an order.

Amazon said that the drones would fly to the location, descend to the customer's backyard, and hover at a safe height. It will release the package and go up in the air.

Lockeford is a small, rural town of about 3,500 people located about 50 miles southeast of Sacramento and just northwest of Stockton, which makes it an ideal location to pilot drones. College Station is the home of Texas A&M University.

We want to introduce our drones to the sky safely. The launch of Prime Air is gradual and will eventually expand to more customers, according to Natalie Banke, an Amazon Air spokeswoman.

Amazon uses hexagonal drones with six propellors that are designed to minimize sound waves. The company is focused on safe transit right now. Amazon is keeping a close eye on deliveries with human eyes while the drones fly autonomously.
