A host of advanced capabilities that surpass the company's two existing monitors are rumored to be included in Apple's new external display.
The display, which is rumored to arrive in early 2023, is expected to be between the Studio Display and the $4,999 Pro Display XDR, but more exact information about the device's positioning and price point is not yet known.
It's likely that the display will look similar to the Pro Display XDR and the Studio Display. There are at least five features that are rumored to be on the new display.
The display is expected to be 27 inches. The Pro Display XDR is five inches larger than the studio display.
In the past, Apple has offered the iMac, UltraFine 5K monitor, and the Thunderbolt display in the 27 inch size. It isn't suitable for some creative professionals that need a larger monitor like the Pro Display XDR, but the 27 inch size will be accessible for a lot of users.
Another sign that it will have to offer more advanced features is the rumor that the monitor will have the same display size as the studio display.
Apple's upcoming monitor will be the first to feature a mini-LED panel according to an analyst. The mini-LED technology has better contrast and deeper blacks than the studio display.
The Pro Display XDR's IPS LCD display. The first mini-LED display was the iPad Pro in 2021. A mini-LED display of this size could be very useful to creative professionals who work with high contrast content and need a consistent experience when working with other mini-LED machines.
Apple's upcoming external display is rumored to support ProMotion, which would allow for a variable refresh rate up to 120Hz. Similar to mini-LED, this feature would provide a consistent experience when using the display with a 14- or 16-inch MacBook Pro, but it could also offer advantages for other activities.
It is possible that the new display could feature additional ports, since it is sitting at a higher price point than the studio display.
Since Apple's next display is expected to be a more high-end device, daisy chaining may be a feature that Apple wants to provide. It will need to offer more than one port in order to attach other high bandwidth peripherals.
According to Mark Gurman, Apple's new external monitors will be powered by Apple chips.
The first Apple monitor to feature a custom chip was the studio display, which is used in the ninth- generation iPad. The chip allows the monitor to run a version of Apple's mobile operating system, receive software updates, and offer features like Center Stage. The A13 Bionic seems to be the most likely option since it is already being used in the studio display, and better performance and efficiency is not noticeable for this class of device.
Ross Young said in May that the display had been delayed because of design issues and that it would be launched in October. Apple was unable to meet the October objective, and Young believes the company is aiming for early in the future.
It's possible that the launch delay is due to the supply constraints Apple has had to contend with throughout the year.
The launch of Apple's new high-end external monitor is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2023. If the new MacBook Pro models compliment each other with mini-LED displays with ProMotion support, Apple could announce a new monitor along with them.
