Grayson McCall shaken up after TD run for Coastal Carolina (0:34)

After taking it himself for a touchdown, Coastal Carolina went up 14-10. There is a time and a place.

The three-time Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year who entered the transfer portal this month but remained with the Chanticleers for the Birmingham Bowl was injured Tuesday night.

On the quarterback's last play in a Coastal Carolina uniform, he ran for a touchdown. He fell into the end zone and never came back.

Staggs said at the news conference that he didn't know the exact nature of the injury but that it was "upper body."

In the first half, guest played most of the time. The score gave Coastal Carolina a 14-10 lead. The Chanticleers were in a deficit at the half.

Holton Ahlers threw a record five touchdown passes and accounted for a game-record six scores for the Pirates. Ahlers, who was selected the game's Most Valuable Player, threw for 300 yards on 26 of 38 passing and rushed for 37 yards and a touchdown for the Pirates.

He played well before he got hurt. He ran the ball four times for 12 yards. He threw a 25-yard pass to Ivy Turon.

He joined the transfer portal after a stellar career with the Chanticleers. He was a redshirt freshman when he burst onto the scene as a sophomore. He was one of two semifinalists for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award. He was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year and the first-team All-Sun Belt Conference quarterback.

During the 2020 season, he threw for 2,488 yards and 26 touchdown with three pick ups, while rushing for 569 yards and seven touchdown.

He won the league's top player award for the second year in a row.

The league's top player this season was McCall, who threw for 2,633 yards and 24 touchdown with two pick ups. If he chooses to use his extra year granted by the NCAA for the 2020 season, he will have two more seasons of eligibility left.
