A court in the Dominican Republic convicted 10 of the 13 people accused of trying to kill former Major League Baseball player David "Big Papi" Ortiz.

The longest sentence among the defendants was 30 years for Rolfi Ferreyra Cruz.

The First Collegiate Court of Santo Domingo sentenced eight other defendants to between 5 and 20 years in prison.

The alleged mastermind of the attack is one of the three people who were acquitted.

The target of the shooting was supposed to be Sixto David Fernandez, who was at the bar with Ortiz. According to authorities, the hitmen confused the two men.

After the shooting in the Dominican capital, he was in a hospital in Boston for six weeks.

In 2004, he helped the Red Sox end their 86-year title drought by batting.....................

The team retired his uniform number 34 after he retired with over 500 home runs. In January, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The full sentence will be read in February.
