A series of articles show that the New York Republican lied about his background during his campaign. An investigation from the New York Times exposed many of the lies thatSantos had told. CNN and the Forward reported thatSantos lied about having a Jewish heritage and being a Holocaust refugee.
The initial response fromSantos was defiantly. The congressman-elect's attorney said in a statement that the congressman-elect had enemies at the New York Times who were trying to make him look bad.
He admitted in interviews on Monday that he had embellished his educational history and professional resume. He lied about owning 13 properties when he said he owned an apartment in Brazil worth seven-figures.
He admitted to the New York Post that he owed a former landlord thousands of dollars in back rent. According to The Times, a judge ordered Santos to pay more than $12,000 to the landlord for several months of not paying rent and that he wrote a bounced check. According to The Times,Santos owes money to a former roommate.
It is not a crime to lie to voters during a campaign, but it is a crime to lie to the government. Penalties can include fines and imprisonment. The former congressman from Nebraska was sentenced to two years of supervised release after being found guilty of lying to the FBI.
The Office of Congressional Ethics could look into the matter once the new Congress is seated. It is not possible for the office to remove a member from Congress because they need a two-thirds vote. Jim Traficant, a Democrat from Ohio, was the last member to be kicked out.
