The Pittsburgh Pirates are in agreement on a one-year, $8 million contract with left-handed pitcher Rich Hill, who will be the oldest player in Major League Baseball this season, according to sources.
Hill was a five-inning specialist in recent years. He started 26 games for Boston last year and posted a 4.27 earned run average.
The deal, which is pending a physical, would add Hill to a roster full of young pitchers. The right-handed Priester and the left-handed Burrows were both at the same level.
Hill was the second oldest player in baseball last year, two months younger than Pujols. Behind Hill were Nelson Cruz and Oliver Perez, both of whom remain unsigned, and 41-year-old Adam Wainwright, who signed a one-year, $17.5 million deal to remain with the St. LouisCardinals.
After starting his career with the Chicago Cubs, Hill went on to play for the Baltimore Orioles, the Cleveland Indians, the Los Angeles Angels, and the New York Yankees. When he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, he spent four years there. He spent time with Minnesota, Boston and the New York Mets before he was traded to the New York Mets.
Hill has a 3.85ERA in 18 years. He has struck out 1,294 batters, walked 482, and allowed 141 home runs in 1,259innings.
