Disney's retro-future animated film Strange World combines a pulpy, old-school science-fiction action aesthetic with a plot line that revolves around connecting with family and protecting the environment. The directors knew how to make the lead character believable, and that's what they did.

Hall said that they wanted their son to be a video game player. Every child and teenager right now is a game player.

There is a card game called "Prairie Outpost". He and his friends get very excited for the game, and over the course of the film, he teaches his family how to play. The ins and outs of the game are not seen by the audience. It was definitely based on Catan and Magic: The Gathering. There are actually rules. There are more cards than we present.

The rules of the game were hidden from the public. Both his grandfather and father are eager to attack creatures and defend outposts, resulting in a game that doesn't quite match up to the rules.

It was nice to have him say, 'Hey, this is what this whole thing is about, living harmoniously with the environment around you'.

Strange World is available on Disney+.
