Detroit is the butt of a lot of jokes and people that haven't been there recently don't understand the transformation There are a lot of things to do in Detroit nowadays.
The Lions moved their team downtown as well, right next door to the tigers. A new arena for the Red Wings and Pistons was opened a few years ago.
I will follow the route my wife and I took when we went to all of these locations to get some pictures.
The Green Dot Stables is one of the best deals in the D. Green Dot is a place to go if you like cheap eats and drinks. It is a little bit of a hidden gem because it is surrounded by industrial buildings. It is just outside of the city center and is close to the heart of Detroit.
Some of the best fries you have ever eaten can be found at Green Dot Stables. They come in a variety of flavors. You can get a meal and a couple of drinks for around fifteen dollars a person.
We like to go to Bookie's Bar & Grill on game days. Most days, game day is for the professional sports teams. Four shots and a domestic pitcher of beer are included in the gameday deal.
The Old Miami is a Detroit staple and has a huge outdoor area where bands play in the summer. Slow's BBQ is right next to Mercury Burger Bar, so if you like BBQ be sure to stop by before you leave.
We can't talk about cheap eats without mentioning the Detroit coney dog. American Coney and Lafayette Coney are two of the best Coneys in the world. Right next to each other, they are. Two partners ran American Coney back in the day. One of the owners left to open his own coney place because of a fight. If you want to do the coney challenge in Detroit, you have to get a dog from each city and pick which one you want.
Detroit has a lot of beer to choose from. Since their beer can be found all over the country, it's probably the most famous brewery in the city. There is a brewery a few minutes away from Green Dot Stables. There are great beers here and they change the tap list frequently. They have board games that are free to play and an old train car that has pinball and other arcade games. Large group gatherings can be made easy with the addition of a massive outdoor area. We have traveled to Detroit a few times.
It's right across the street from the Trumbell and Porter Hotel and I was sad when they left the Choice Hotels program.
The Dirty Blonde is one of the best beers I have ever had and it is a great place to have a drink and eat.
The Eastern Market is a great place to shop and eat.
You will thank me later if you grab the Feta cheese pizza from Niki's.
I need to check out Brew Detroit, which is a block away from Batch Brewery.
The newest location was our next stop after we checked in to the hotel. It can take up to two hours to get into the Monarch Club, so we wanted to get in early.
A lookout tower type of room is included in the bar area which is located inside the building.
When the weather is nice, this place is worth a visit. You can see the stadiums, the Detroit Athletic Club and the rest of downtown Detroit. The Shinola Hotel is a part of the Brakeman beer bar.
As we progress down the list, we are getting trendier and trendier. The Candy Bar was next on the tour. The place is located in a boutique hotel and is open from 5PM to 10PM.
The Candy Bar is small and can be crowded at one time.
The place feels like it was from the roaring twenties. The bar has a large chandelier above it and the high back booths make it look great. I need to check out the other location of the owner, Lady of the House, which is located in Corktown by a brewery.
Some rooms at the Detroit Club are open to the public, despite it being a private club. It's a good idea to hit up a club without a membership if you want to get a bougie in Detroit.
The Whitney is an old school place. During the summer months, you can have dinner in the main dining room followed by drinks at the Ghost Bar.
Do you like cocktails? A guy in a man bun will give you a $20 drink. Bad luck bar is what you should look for. There is a picture of a snake on the door that is hidden in an alley. This place is as cool as it gets.
It is always busy and the best way to get a reservation is to call as soon as possible at 5PM. Asking for a bar seat will allow you to see the magic.
When you walk in, you know where it is. You can see the lights from the ceiling and the sky high liquor wall behind the bar. It's meant to cleanse your pallet. There is a bigger version of it on the menu. The options seem more extravagant than the last one. Their version of an old fashioned was the one I chose. My drink was smoked to make it taste better. My wife had a drink that was light on fire.
Most people only stay for one drink because of the price tag, but I think it was the best time to spend money. Beer drinkers don't like cocktail snobs.
The Checker Bar is a great place to hang out. There are a lot of 25 cent arcade games on the second floor. This is the place to go if you want to play some old fashioned games. Prime + Proper is the most logical place to go, but there's more to it in a second.
The Sugar House is in the same area as Slow's BBQ, so it is the obvious choice.
Right next to Bad Luck Bar is Prime + Proper. We have eaten dinner at Prime + Proper many times after having drinks at Bad Luck. We have never had a bad meal at this restaurant in Detroit. I think it is worth the money.
Every year my daughter and I go on a Daddy Daughter date here before school starts.
Hopefully I gave you a wide array of options of things to do downtown Detroit. Options that go beyond the mundane go to the casinos and check out a sporting event or concert. Detroit’s restaurant and cocktail scene is one of the most underrated in the country. People still hold onto past notions about the city I love. The truth is you really don’t know until you try it for yourself. Hopefully that clicking noise I hear is everyone booking their flights to the Motor City! This is just scratching the surface of what Detroit has to offer after all.
