Sam Hartman has entered the NCAA transfer portal as a graduate transfer according to sources.
Hartman threw for over 100 touchdown passes in his five seasons at Wake Forest. Philip Rivers is the all-time leader in career passing yards in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Hartman started 45 games for Wake Forest and led the team to a 27-18 record.
Notre Dame is favored to get Hartman. Drew Pyne is transferring to Arizona State and the Fighting Irish need a new quarterback. Hartman will take a week to evaluate all his options, according to a source, as he seeks a high-end situation to prevent him from declaring for the draft.
Hartman is projected to be a third-day draft pick, so the thought is that he can improve his stock in college. Hartman was not thought to be picked before the sixth round, if at all.
Hartman played in Wake Forest's slow mesh system, which the scouts believe would benefit him in the pros.
Hartman was expected to enter the NFL draft as his most likely option for most of the season.
If Hartman goes to a blue-blood school, he'd likely be able to accumulate more marketing money or name, image and likeness deals than he would have in trying to make an NFL roster.
Hartman was a great player at Wake Forest. The school's all-time wins record was tied in 2021. He led them to victories over Rutgers and Missouri in the same bowl.
Hartman missed the opener with a blood clot that was not related to football. Hartman had Paget-Schroetter syndrome, a blood clot that can be linked to repeated strenuous activity, when he came back.
Hartman threw for 3,701 yards and 38 touchdown this year.
Wake Forest will play at Notre Dame in October of 2023.
