Fairwork India said in a report Tuesday that the firms did not create fair conditions for their workers.
According to the research project, the firms did not provide fair pay, fair contracts, fair management, fair representation or fair working conditions to their gig workers.
In its fourth annual report, Fairwork India said that only Bigbasket, Flipkart and Urban Company were awarded the first point because of the public commitments they have made to paying workers at least the hourly local minimum wage.
The difference between worker's earnings per hour and the hourly local minimum wage will be reimbursed by Bigbasket and Urban Company. The pricing structure for workers will be based on the local minimum wage. The report said that the company has taken steps to hold its service providers to the same commitment.
The vast amount of employee benefits are not extended to gig economy workers. Firms that take service from these workers are exploiting them.
The promise of flexibility of the digital platform economy raises a lot of questions.
