There are stacks of pancakes under the water of the most-visited waterfall in Michigan. Pancakes made with ice.

On its Facebook page, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources shared a photo of the pancake ice.

Theresa Neal thought it was cool.

There are a number of ways in which pancake ice forms. At the bottom of the Tahquamenon Falls, ice particles form and clump together. Their shape is raised as cold water and slush accumulate on top.

The water movement in the pool beneath the falls is very low. There is a lot of turbulence near the pool. The shear force caused by the water outside the pool is larger than that in the pool, which causes the Floes to turn into circular shapes.

In places like the ocean, pancake ice discs can be as small as a foot.

Will the Great Lakes have ice this winter? Make sure to check Alaska. The weather data shows that Detroit misses on Christmas snow.

In the winter, the Upper Falls have the same amenities as in the summer. She said that the walkway to the Upper Falls views is kept free of snow and that a nearby private brewpub is open every day.

She said there are lots of opportunities to snowshoe and cross-country ski at the Upper Falls. A 4-mile cross-country ski trail begins and ends at the Upper Falls restroom building.

Visitors need to walk about a mile to get to the falls, Neal said. Ice cleats are recommended for traction on the track.

There are 25 campsites at the Lower Falls that are kept clear of snow and have electricity and outhouses nearby.
