Mac Jones responded to Eli Apple calling him out for a dirty play in the game by saying there were no bad intentions.
According to a source, the play is being reviewed by the National Football League as part of its code of conduct for all players. Financial fines are imposed on people who are found to be in violation.
The play that raised Apple's ire came with 6:18 remaining in the fourth quarter, on second-and-11 from the Cincinnati's 30-yard line, when Jones underhanded an incomplete pass while in the grasp of Vonn Bell.
Jones sprinted towards Thornton in hopes of catching him, as he was being trailed by Thornton. Jones fell to the ground in front of Apple as he sprinted down the field.
Apple said after the game that he tripped him. I didn't think it was a good play. I have seen him do that before.
During his radio interview, Jones explained his opinion of the play.
He said on WEEI that he went down in front of him to make sure he didn't try to slow down Tyquan. I tried to stop a fast guy from getting to another fast guy.
There's a lot that goes into it, and it's a split second decision. It's a physical game and you are trying to win it. Trying to help the team.
I have admiration for Eli and the team. The game was played well by them. There is no intent to hurt anyone on that play. I get hit a lot when I play quarterback, so I don't think the defense is intending to do that. All of us are playing hard. It's not a big deal.
Jones was asked if he knew the play had been stopped.
He said that he was just playing the play and that they were trying to get him. If they're not going to review it, you have to play the play all the way through. It was necessary to play it through and try to slow things down.
