Four power substations in Washington State were attacked on Christmas Day, disrupting service to thousands of residents, just weeks after gunfire in North Carolina prompted an investigation by the FBI.
The vulnerability of the nation's power grid has been underscored by at least eight attacks on power stations in four states. It's not known if they were related.
Thousands of people were left without power after vandals forced their way into four substations and damaged equipment, in one case leading to a fire. The sheriff's office said that most of the power had been restored by the time they arrived.
The sheriff's office didn't know if there were any motives or if the attack was a coordinated one.
Less than a month ago, gunfire at two North Carolina power plants caused thousands of homes and businesses to lose power.
The US Department of Homeland Security warned in January that domestic extremists have been planning to attack electricity infrastructure.
