Josh Kaplan was driving his car on the 405 freeway in Los Angeles when he saw a vehicle behind him stop.
He told Insider that he saw a car facing left against the barrier.
The vehicle had smoke coming from it, and he realized it was aTesla. It caught fire when I called. It looked like sparklers were going off.
The driver of the crashed car was not hurt. The driver told Kaplan that the Model X stopped against the wall because it was in autopilot.
The fit and finish of Kaplan's car has been a complete disappointment, despite the software.
He said that his Model X has made many frightening miscalculations.
He said that last week it ignored a traffic cone and ran over it. The car turned from the inside of a double-turn lane into the outside lane even though other cars were already in that space.
Kaplan said that the user interface would often display a blank screen when the software crashes or the system doesn't update that some basic functions are turned off.
If the computer crashes while you're driving, you don't have a way to know what your car is doing.
Kaplan said that autopilot should be advertised as the scariest ride.
According to a report released earlier this year by the US road-safety regulators, vehicles using autopilot were involved in over 250 crashes over the last year.
The company didn't reply to a request for comment.
