T-Mobile agreed to pay $350 million to settle a class-action lawsuit brought by a number of the company's customers. Time is running out on the chance to claim a piece of the payouts. This is what to know.
In an August 2021 statement, T-Mobile confirmed that there had been a "highly sophisticated cyberattack" against the company's systems, which had compromised data files with personal information from 7.8 million current and former customers. First and last names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and driver's license/ ID information were included.
A group of T-Mobile customers affected by the data breach filed a class-action lawsuit against the company, in which they claim that the number of current, former, and prospective customers impacted was actually around 76 million.
T-Mobile agreed to pay $350 million to settle customers' claims and an additional $150 million to upgrade its data protection in a proposed settlement with a federal court in Missouri. This was not an acknowledgement of wrongdoing by the wireless carrier.
