3rd case brought by DeSantis' election police dismissed

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. is located in the state of Florida The third case of a person who was arrested by the elections police unit was thrown out by the court.

The first major action taken by the Office of Election Crimes and Security was the arrest of 20 people on criminal charges of illegal voting in 2020.

The Office of Statewide Prosecution can only prosecute crimes that happened in two or more counties, and that's why the case was thrown out. There were two other cases that were dismissed.

Democrats and voting rights groups were against the elections police unit because they thought it would be used to help the governor.

People who were convicted of murder or a felony sexual offense were the focus of the 20 defendants who were arrested in August. The majority of those charged were from the Democratic strongholds of Florida.

The state legislature created the election police unit to address voter fraud concerns after Donald Trump claimed that his reelection was stolen.

Voter fraud is rare and usually detected. An Associated Press investigation of the 2020 presidential election found less than 475 potential cases of voter fraud out of 25.5 million ballots cast in the six states where Trump and his allies disagreed with the outcome. Florida carried out a smooth election in 2020.
