Latin music didn't sustain the breakthrough on a global stage In the past few years, that has changed, as evidenced by Daddy Yankee's song "Despacito," the most popular song in the world in 2017: J Balvin is one of the most popular singers in the world. Global distribution has made a difference. It used to be that acts had to compete for shelf space in Walmart and a spot on radio in order to get noticed. The digital era is the biggest difference. Daddy Yankee and Ozuna come out with a record. Daddy Yankee has performed in more cities in Mexico than they originally planned. He sold out a stadium in Mexico City for five nights in a row. He has never been to many US cities that he had never been to before. Bad Bunny has set a higher bar than Daddy Yankee did when he recorded the first Reggaeton hit. He sold more than two million tickets and his tour is on track to gross more than $430 million. Next year it will be up to a new artist to keep Latin music going strong after Daddy Yankee and Bad Bunny retire.
