The average lifespan of humans is about 72 years according to the World Health Organization. A bowhead whale can reach 200 years of age, while a giant tortoise can live more than 100 years.

Some animals have blown past the life expectancy of their species in order to gain attention.

The western lowland gorilla is the most widespread of all the gorilla's species. The lifespan in the wild is 30 to 40 years. They can live into their 50's in captivity.

Colo, the world's oldest zoo-born gorilla, died at the Columbus Zoo at 60 years old.

Fatou at the Berlin Zoo in Germany and Trudy at the Little Rock, Arkansas Zoo are both believed to be 65 years old. The oldest gorilla at the Atlanta Zoo was 61 years old.

Elephants can live into their 50s. Some people have made it into their 80's. An asian elephant named Lin Wang lived to be 86 years old. He was the oldest elephant in captivity at the time of his death.

An elephant at a temple in India had a long life. She died at the ripe old age of 88.

There are several Asian elephants in the US who are in their 70s. These ages are often estimated.

There are 20 bird species that are part of the parrot sub family. Some of them have lived for over 100 years in captivity.

A sulfur-crested cockatoo named Fred is 104 years old.

The Australian sulfur-crested cockatoo known as "Cocky Bennett" lived until he was 120 years old. Bennett lived in a hotel.

Cookie was known for his longevity. He lived to be 83 years old and died at the zoo.

There are giant tortoises. The last member of the Pinta Island species is known as Lonesome George. When he died, he was thought to be more than 100 years old.

Jonathan is a giant tortoise. He is the world's oldest living land animal at 190 years of age. St.Helena is an island in the South Atlantic Ocean and has been home to Jonathan since he was a child.

Researchers found that the lifespan of the sharks in the study was over 200 years. The sharks are native to the North Atlantic and can live up to 400 years.

The longest sharks in the study were 493 centimeters (16 feet) long and had lifespans of 335 and 362 years.

Slow growth is a potential secret to the species' longevity. A shark was found in the waters of Belize.
