The woman who called police to report a family violence assault by Texas basketball coach Chris Beard did not want him arrested or prosecuted.

Beard was accused of killing his fiancée, Randi Trew, who lived with him.

Trew said in a statement sent to The Associated Press by her attorney that Beard was acting in self-defense from her.

We are sad that we have brought negative attention to our family, friends, and the University of Texas. I apologized for my role in the unfortunate event. Trew said in the statement that he realized that his frustration caused a physical struggle between him and Chris.

I told law enforcement that Chris didn't kill me. I don't deny that Chris acted in self-defense. I don't think Chris was trying to hurt me. I didn't intend to have him arrested or prosecuted. She thanked everyone for their support and prayers.

Trew's name was blacked out from the charging documents, but he agreed to be named. He didn't say anything else.

Randi Trew's statement is being reviewed by the university. The university doesn't comment on pending investigations.

Minton didn't respond to a request for comment.

According to the police affidavit in support of Beard's arrest, Trew initially placed an emergency call from the house and told responding officers Beard had killed her and bit her when an argument turned physical. Bite marks on her arm, as well as scratches on her face and leg, were listed in the affidavit.

According to the affidavit, Trew told police that he had been physically and emotionally abused by the man.

Beard told police that Trew hit at him and that he tried to grab her wrists to stop her. Beard told police that she thought she was trying to hit him.

Beard is in his second season of a seven-year guaranteed contract that pays him more than $5 million annually. He was 112-55 with Texas Tech. He was named The Associated Press coach of the year after leading the Red Raiders to a 31-7 finish and a loss in the national championship game.

Since Beard's suspension, Texas is 2-0. The Longhorns play Texas A&M-Commerce on December 27th.
