The wireless charging mat is inspired by the design of Cybertruck and can accommodate up to three devices. The wireless charging platform costs $300. The mat, magnetic stand, and some tech that we once called the most promising AirPower alternative are included in the price.
If you put your device on the platform, the 30 Qi charging coils underneath the alcantara fabric cover will be enough to charge it. The device was designed with Freepower wireless charging technology. The company used to be called Aira and in 2020 we called its system the closest thing to AirPower.
Many people have compared the Wireless Charging Platform to Apple's canceled product, AirPower. An accessory that could charge up to three devices at the same time was promised. During its announcement, Apple said you could use the mat to charge your Apple Watch, and that it would communicate with each other to manage the charging.
The company isn't promising any of them. You won't be able to use the platform to charge your devices since they aren't compatible with the standard. There is no mention of devices being able to communicate on the page.
The last point is questionable. With a 65W power adapter and the ability to pump out up to 15W to all three devices, does it make sense for the company to be more efficient? The whole point of this type of product is to have one place to charge all your devices, and this can't do that for a lot of people. I think there are more Wearable owners than people who have to charge two phones at the same time.
I wouldn't have dropped $300 on a wireless charging pad. I don't have enough devices to need that kind of thing, and even if I did, the dimensions of the charge would be limiting. If you want to fit three devices onto it, they're going to be pretty packed together, making the ability to put those devices anywhere less useful If I only charge a device or two, this type of charge is pretty much useless. I have a cable-munching gremlin in my house and an "integrated"usb-c power cable on such an expensive device is a dealbreaker for me.
The good news is that the base station pro made similar promises years ago and uses Aira tech, which provides significantly slower charging. The latest version of the Base Station uses magnets to align your devices. If you want to give up the ability to lay your device down anywhere, you can get a chargers for less than $300. The cutouts from Mophie should make it easier to find the best place to charge your device.
If you want to be able to fast charge three devices at once, or hate having to place your phone and earbuds down on a charging pad, it's cool to see Free. Even with its eye-watering price, the FreePower charger is still a lot cheaper than the one from the electric car company.
The Wireless Charging Platform will be shipped in February.
