Qantas pilots on a flight from Singapore to London had to make an emergency landing in Azerbaijan as their plane flew over central Asia.

Emergency services met Flight QF1 at the Heydar Aliyev international airport after pilots reported a code used to communicate an onboard emergency.

After nine hours in the air, the plane made a 180 degree turn and issued an emergency code as it flew over Georgian airspace, according to flight radars.

The emergency landing request was made due to smoke in the cargo compartment, according to the statement. There were no injuries and the plane made a smooth landing. The statement said there were over 300 people on the ship.

According to the statement from the airport, this was not the first time an A380 had made an emergency landing at the airport.

A Qantas spokesman couldn't say if there was smoke in the cargo hold or not.

A Qantas spokesman said that the flight from Singapore to London was forced to make an emergency landing in Azerbaijan.

The aircraft will be inspected prior to it's departure.

It's not clear how long the plane will stay in the city.
