VAR should be quicker & simpler, says new referees' boss Webb

Former professional players should be encouraged to take up refereeing.

After five years in the United States, the first chief referee of the Professional Game Match Officials was named.

The 51-year-old who refereeed the 2010 World Cup final has pledged to broaden the number of referees.

He believes that the professional ranks are an undiscovered source and that some players could find refereeing attractive.

After Argentina's victory over France in the World Cup final, much was made about the Pole's playing background, as well as the fact that one of the World Cup final referees was a mentor to him.

We need to find a way to get people in. "We've never been able to get ex- players involved in the game."

Someone out there will want to be a pioneer.

"I don't expect players who have played at the very highest level who have got other opportunities to come into refereeing, but someone who has played a decent career, that's got good knowledge of the game."

"I think there's an opportunity for someone to really blaze a trail and we would welcome them with the skills they have got from that playing career as long as they have the other skills they need to be successful."

It took him 13 and a half years to get to the top tier of English football.

The process has been streamlined to make it easier to get the right experience.

You still need to do some of those difficult yards to get the experience you need to survive at the high levels and flourish there, but you can credit what experience you've already got in the game through playing or whatever it is and then build on that.

'If you have the skills, you will get the opportunity'

The emergence of more female officials, as well as the desire to recruit more referees from a diverse background, were highlighted by the comments made by the man.

It is only a matter of time before women are in charge of a match, as evidenced by the fact that the first woman to referee a men's World Cup match was Frappart, as well as the fact that the first woman to be an assistant referee in the English top flight

He said that it's great to have female officials coming through who have gone on a path the same way as other officials.

These days there is no limit. At the very highest level in the World Cup and domestically, more women are coming into the highest levels of the male and female game and doing great work.

If you have the skills you need and the quality, you will get opportunities. Female officials are going to take charge of some of the biggest games in the world in the future.

Respect the refs

More than 400 players and coaches were banned for attacking or threatening referees and match officials in English grassroots football during the 21st century.

"What is seen at the highest level of the game impacts on other levels, and that's what I'm sorry for," said the head of the Professional Game Match Officials Association.

While the German initially escaped a touchline ban, he eventually served a one-match suspension after the FA appealed against the severity of the punishment.

He stated that the power of example is strong.

We don't want people to drop out because they have bad experience.

When lines are crossed, we have a responsibility to be strong. That is what we want to achieve.

Trying to make VAR work

It has been confirmed that video assistant referees have turned six correct decisions into incorrect ones so far in the season.

He wants to use his experience in MLS to improve the system.

If this is not in real time, supporters may be able to hear exchanges between the referee and the VAR.

To show the world the processes that go into making decisions, the rationale for decisions being taken is something we are looking at.

There is a greater level of acceptance if people understand how we got there.

He used the example of the penalty given in the World Cup semi-final for Argentina against Croatia to show how difficult it is to get 100% accuracy in the decision making process.

He said that the game throws up lots and lots of subjectivity.

Someone is going to be disappointed if we use VAR to correct those decisions.

If something is clear and obvious, it shouldn't take minutes to work it out, and that's why the use of VAR is important.

A lot of guidance and coaching will be given by me.

The VARs should not be looking too hard. They want to look for the errors that jump off the screen.
