Football needs a European Super League to stop clubs from running away from the rest of the league, according to Joan Laporta.

The 12 founding members of the Super League project, including Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus, are still standing together.

You can watch the LaLiga, Bundesliga, and more on the U.S. based on your location.

They argue that the governance of European football is an illegal monopoly under EU competition, but an opinion from the Court of Justice of the European Union last week disagreed with them.

It is not too late for the governing body to change its stance on the creation of a new competition according to Laporta.

Laporta told Barcelona TV that European football needs to be changed.

The television rights for the premier league will increase from 5 billion to 7 billion. The LaLiga teams can't compete with the top teams in the league. The English side have more and more resources than the Barca side. This needs to be changed.

In the interest of the clubs and free competition in Europe, we hope the final court resolution will be favorable.

It's the clubs that make the least money in the football industry so we are trying to change the governance model. It cannot be that way.

I'm positive. I believe the final resolution will have an impact on the case. Our own competition needs the power of the clubs.

They should be at the table with us. We could find investment from a country outside the EU if they are not. Football needs it. I try to create dialogue with all of them.

Laporta played down hopes of bringing Lionel Messi back to the club, saying he didn't want to "generate expectations for something that is hugely difficult" to pull off.

There is a January transfer window preview.
