There was a chance to upgrade to the new HomeKit architecture on the devices. Problems with the Home app were reported after the upgrade was installed.

One of the key features of the new Home app architecture is that Apple claims it will be more reliable. The Home app in iOS 16.2 doesn't offer the option to upgrade to the new architecture. The upgrade option is not available on many devices.

Before the public release of the new architecture on December 13th, the new architecture was introduced as an optional upgrade. Both the public and private releases required Apple devices to be in the cloud to be able to run the latest versions of the operating system. When the Home app is used, a manual process is required to upgrade to the latest version of the operating system.

Problems with missing devices have been caused by the update.

Users who downloaded the upgrade before it was removed have reported issues such as the app being unable to re-add members, and the Home account being kicked out of use. Users on the MacRumors forum have reported being unable to invite users to share the Home, HomeKit devices being stuck displaying an "updating" status, and some accessories vanishing from the Home app completely. The previous version of the app can't be reverted to by users who have upgraded.

We don't know why the upgrade was pulled or when we can expect it to come back. Should we hear back, we will update this story.
