The family of the former Denver Broncos running back announced his death on the social media site.

The family of former Broncos running back Ronnie Hillman announced in an Instagram post to Hillman's account that the 31-year-old passed away Wednesday after battling a rare form of cancer. Hillman was a member of the Broncos' Super Bowl 50 championship team. Terribly sad news. pic.twitter.com/e78BvwllXd

He was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in the summer.

He was drafted in the third round by the Broncos in 2012 and spent four years with them. He was part of the team that won Super Bowl 50 at the end of the season.

After a year with the Vikings, he was out of the league by the next year.

In two seasons at San Diego State, the Long Beach, California, native totaled 3,243 rushing yards and 36 touchdown runs. He ran for 1,711 yards in 2011.

Aztecs coach Brady Hoke said in a statement that his deepest sympathies went out to the family. I will remember him as a great teammate and hard worker even though I only had to coach him one season. His passion for the game was infectious as he came to practice with a smile. He's going to be an Aztec for the rest of his life.
