Several major car companies, including GM and Volvo, have announced plans to produce only electric cars in the future. Not all cars are the same.

Toyota plans to offer a range of options, including hydrogen- fuel-cell vehicles, instead of focusing exclusively on electric vehicles. A Toyota spokesman told MIT Technology Review that the company's focus is on how to reduce carbon emissions the most quickly.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles that can drive short distances on electricity using a small battery have been released by the company. The 2023 edition of Toyota's Prius Prime is a plug in hybrid.

The company has been criticized for its approach to EV. All-electric vehicles will be needed to get to zero emissions.

In recent interviews, Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda has raised doubts about how fast the auto industry can pull a U-turn on fossil fuels. While Toyota plans for EV sales to reach 3.5 million by 2030, the company also sees hybrid as an affordable option, and one that can play a key role in cutting emissions.

A tale of two hybrids

There are two different types of vehicles called hybrid. Conventional hybrid electric vehicles have a small battery that helps the gas-powered engine by recapturing energy during driving. They can't drive more than a few miles on battery power. The gas mileage can be boosted by the battery. The original Toyota Prius is one of the most well-known hybrid cars.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles have a bigger battery and can be plugged in and charged with electricity. Plug-in hybrid cars can run 25 to 50 miles on electricity, then switch over to their gasoline engine for more distance. Plug-in hybrid is what the Prius Prime is.

Conventional hybrid vehicles are more popular in the US than all-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles.
