It has taken a long time to get here. Constant criticism, a strongly-worded letter from the Environmental Protection Agency, a presidential plea, and a lawsuit from 16 states are all it took for the agency to stop buying gas-powered delivery vehicles.

Take a look at the USPS plan to switch to EV and review what it took to get there. Some of my favorite Tech Review climate coverage from the year have been rounded up. Get into it.

The obvious choice

The transportation sector accounted for 27% of greenhouse gas emissions in the US as of 2020. The USPS makes up about one third of the US federal government's 650,000 vehicles.

The federal fleet is one of the targets of Joe Biden's plans for electric vehicles, with a goal for all new federal vehicles to be electric by the end of the century.

The postal service has been marching to a different drummer. The USPS didn't like the Biden administration's plan to purchase more fossil fuel- powered vehicles. When the agency announced a contract to replace trucks, only 10% of them would be electric.
