Tesla Driver Says Full Self-Driving Mode Caused 8-Car Crash

On November 19th, Musk said that "full self-driving software" was available to all of the company's customers. The company's EV triggered a pileup just outside of San Francisco on Thanksgiving Day.

Nine people were injured in the accident, including one juvenile who had to go to the hospital, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Highway Patrol couldn't confirm if the FSD was engaged when the crash occurred, but they did see videos of the incident in which the EV changed lanes and then slowed to a complete stop.

"Full self-driving" is designed to keep up with traffic, steer in the lane and abide by traffic signals. It requires an attentive human driver prepared to take full control of the car at any moment. It's delighted some drivers but also alarmed others with its limitations. Drivers are warned by Tesla when they install "full self-driving"that it "may do the wrong thing at the worst time."

According to the Highway Patrol's report, the Model S was moving at 55 mph when it went into the left lane and hit the brakes. The other eight vehicles all traveled at an average speed and crashed into each other.

CNN reports that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has a file on the cars. Many of the issues currently under investigation are related to braking. Drivers say they've experienced random, sudden braking, and have detailed many close calls.

According to CNN's report, the NHTSA's investigation involves an engineering analysis, which indicates a possible recall in the future.
